Volunteers with the nonprofit Network for Endangered Sea Turtles monitored a record 56 sea turtle nests across North Carolina’s Northern Outer Banks this year, covering 60 miles of shoreline from the Virginia border to Nags Head. 

The region serves as a vital nesting ground for five threatened or endangered species, including loggerheads, green sea turtles and Kemp's ridleys.

Operating daily pre-dawn ATV patrols, NEST’s volunteer network identifies nest tracks, secures incubation sites and monitors hatchlings as they emerge to make their way to the ocean.

Days after being diagnosed with alpha-gal syndrome, David Hartley was dropped by his primary care practice of 20 years, Bayview Physicians Group, after requesting to opt out of a Medicare care-management program.

His story is one of several patient accounts highlighting frustration over Bayview's handling of the program, Advanced Primary Care Management, with patients alleging they are billed monthly fees for services that yield no noticeable change in their actual care. 

Although Bayview promised benefits such as 24/7 care team access, personalized care plans and preventive monitoring, patients noted that several of these features were already standard to the program.

Virginia State Sen. Lamont Bagby recently called on public colleges and universities to cooperate with the state Uprooting Commission, which is investigating how institutions historically expanded into Black communities through displacement and eminent domain. 

Established in 2024, the state-approved commission builds on reporting by the Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism at WHRO and ProPublica to guide land policy decisions and potential reparations. 

The commission's findings seek to document historical land-use policies to prevent similar harm as local governments consider future developments, including data centers.
