Virginia Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi recently made a stop in Norfolk for her statewide listening tour focused on energy costs.

She was greeted by more than 150 residents protesting the proposed $67 billion merger between Dominion Energy and Florida-based NextEra Energy. 

If approved by the Virginia State Corporation Commission, the acquisition would become the largest utility merger in U.S. history and create the world's largest energy provider.

Residents expressed concerns that the consolidation would lead to surging electric bills.

Norfolk nonprofit Keeping Us Secure and Prosperous has partnered with Tidewater Compost to launch Compost for Change, a project hoping to expand urban agriculture and make composting accessible for local residents.

The program provides participating households with starter kits to collect a wide variety of kitchen and yard waste, ranging from produce scraps to meat, dairy and greasy pizza boxes. 

Participants drop off their collected waste at local sites, such as the Berkley Community Center, and receive bags of finished, nutrient-rich compost twice a year for personal or community garden use.

Flock Safety's automated license plate reader cameras record vehicle details, license plates, bumper stickers and physical marks. The information goes into a centralized, searchable database used by law enforcement. Those in favor of the cameras say they help in solving crimes and finding missing people. Those who oppose the technology say it allows for surveillance of citizens without a warrant.
