A new study by the University of Chicago reveals that food insecurity affects 43% of households on the Southside and Eastern Shore and 50% on the Virginia Peninsula.

Commissioned by the Federation of Virginia Food Banks after the USDA ended its long-running annual survey, the study provides a detailed look at local hunger by surveying households across all income levels.

Regional food bank leaders say the findings reflect what they have witnessed for years, with distribution lines growing 30% to 40% longer as working families struggle with rising costs.

Norfolk redirects almost $3 million from Sheriff’s Office renovation to the Harbor Park parking deck construction

This week, the Norfolk City Council unanimously voted to reallocate $3 million originally budgeted for Sheriff’s Office renovations toward the East Street Garage Project near Harbor Park.

The canceled renovation plans were scrapped after city officials determined that remaining in the Sheriff's Office's building on Front Street was far more cost-effective amid rising construction costs.

To make room for the parking expansion, the Sheriff’s former administrative building at 140 East St. will be demolished.

The 90-minute tour took passengers past historical and regional sites, including Hampton University, the VA Medical Center and Blackbeard’s Point.

AV 250th Anniversary of First Baptist Church Williamsburg

The historic First Baptist Church Williamsburg was founded in 1776, and to this day has a vibrant and active congregation. Many of its members are descendants of the original enslaved and free Blacks who met secretly under a brush arbor at Green Spring Plantation to sing, pray and worship.

For generations, the true history of the church and its impact was buried — literally — under a parking lot in Colonial Williamsburg. That history has been brought to light thanks to the work of the Let Freedom Ring Foundation under the leadership of Connie Matthews Harshaw.

On the next Another View, we will talk with church and foundation leadership about the newest efforts to keep the history alive as the church celebrates its 250th anniversary. And we will hear about the new book, "First Baptist Church of Williamsburg: A History of Resilience, Determination, and Hope,” authored by renowned historian Dr. Cassandra Newby Alexander.
