Construction has officially begun on a nearly $400-million project that will add 7 miles of part-time express lanes to I-64 in Norfolk between Tidewater Drive and the I-264 interchange.
The project will convert a shoulder into an express lane while also widening and modernizing several bridges along the stretch.
Scheduled to open in 2029, this effort marks the final leg of a broader 45-mile series of improvements to the express lane network in Hampton Roads.

Guitarist Mike Campbell, best known for his work with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, is set to perform in Virginia Beach with his band, the Dirty Knobs, as part of Farm Aid's local debut.
Campbell previously played the inaugural Farm Aid event alongside Tom Petty and Bob Dylan in 1985. Following Petty's passing in 2017, Campbell turned the Dirty Knobs into a full-time endeavor.
In an interview with WHRO News, Campbell described songwriting as his greatest pleasure and shared how playing smaller venues helped him build the confidence needed to front a band.
