‘It’s time’: Williamsburg moving forward with new library

After years of planning, the Williamsburg City Council voted to replace its downtown library on Scotland Street with a 50,000-square-foot facility on the site of the former police station.
Originally built in 1973, the current building lacks accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act, suffers from outdated utilities and is too small to accommodate modern technological and space demands.
The new building will expand overall space by roughly 8,000 square feet and double available parking.

Sailors aboard the Norfolk-based USS Arlington gathered on deck for a moment of silence to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Commissioned in 2013, the amphibious landing dock was specifically named to honor the 184 people who died in the attack on the Pentagon.
Leadership estimates that 47% of the ship's current crew is under 25 years old, meaning they were not yet born when the events occurred.
For older crew members, memories of the tragedy and its immediate aftermath inspired their decisions to enter military service.
