How much screen time should young students have at school? Virginia Beach School Board weighs in

With more research pointing to screen time as a driver of mood problems and lower grades, the Virginia Beach School Board is considering banning Chromebooks from classrooms before second grade, and changing rules around older students’ use.

When the board introduced the idea last week, teachers, parents and school board members agreed that students need less time in front of screens. Debate arose from whether a total ban for younger students was the right answer.

The Virginia Beach School Board's policy and review committee recommended guidance for elementary students, though some board members implied a policy for older students was also on the table.
