Norfolk aims to start Military Circle Mall demolition in October

Norfolk expects to have a demolition contractor on site at the shuttered Military Circle Mall by October, advancing plans to tear down the defunct structure within a favorable budget below the city's $10 million allocation.

At the same time, the city is set to conduct grant-funded technical studies aimed at elevating the 74-acre site from Tier 2 to Tier 3 in Virginia’s economic development system, making it more attractive to outside developers.

These comprehensive site assessments covering environmental, geotechnical, and utility readiness will take six to eight months to complete and will directly inform future redevelopment plans.

The Super Girl Surf Festival is coming to Virginia Beach this weekend, bringing together 4,000 female athletes across 14 sports to celebrate and promote women’s athletics.

The festival is part of a long-running event series, which expanded from California and Florida. It features a diverse range of competitions, including surfing, skateboarding and inline skating; plus music and arts.

Local athletes, such as inline skater Rachel “RJ” Jaffe, view the festival as a powerful platform for camaraderie and inspiration, highlighting the supportive nature of the local women's action sports community.

Dominion misjudged its fuel costs again this year. How much will customers be asked to pay?

Dominion Energy says unexpected storms, rising fuel prices and demand have led it to underestimate its annual fuel costs three times since 2020. This year, the utility missed the mark by about 25%, or nearly $1 billion.

By law, those costs can be passed along to ratepayers. Dominion is asking Virginia regulators to approve a plan to raise monthly rates that would cost the typical customer about $260 over a 7- or 10-year stretch.

Coincidentally, that would wipe out a proposed sweetener in the NextEra Energy acquisition of Dominion – a $240 rebate to customers over two years.
